Air Quality in Spain
How air quality works in Spain: the index it uses, the pollutants that dominate, the seasonal pattern, the cities to watch, and the agencies that monitor it. Spain reports on the European Air Quality Index.
The big picture
Spain's air quality is moderate, with traffic and Saharan dust the defining influences. As an EU member it reports on the European Air Quality Index alongside national and city networks.
Dominant pollutants and where they come from
NO₂ from traffic is the main problem in Madrid and Barcelona. Ozone peaks under the strong summer sun. Spain is also the European country most exposed to Saharan dust ("calima"), which lifts PM10 sharply during episodes — see Saharan Dust.
The seasonal pattern
Still winter days produce the urban NO₂ "boina" (cap) over Madrid; summer drives ozone, especially inland; Saharan dust can arrive in any season but is common in spring. Madrid and Barcelona operate low-emission zones to cut traffic emissions.
Who monitors it
City networks (such as Madrid's) and the national ministry MITECO publish readings; the European Environment Agency aggregates Spain into the common European index.
