BreezoMeter vs AirNow: Hyperlocal Modeling vs Regulatory Monitors
BreezoMeter built its name on hyperlocal air-quality data, a modeled AQI value for essentially any point on a map, not just the location of a physical monitor. Google acquired BreezoMeter in 2022 and its data now underpins Google's own air-quality API and Maps air-quality layer. AirNow, by contrast, only reports where a physical regulatory monitor exists. The two approaches solve different problems, and knowing which is which changes how much to trust a specific number.
What BreezoMeter (Google Air Quality) does
Rather than only reporting monitor readings, BreezoMeter's model ingests regulatory monitor data, satellite observations, traffic patterns, weather, and land-use data, then produces a modeled AQI estimate for any latitude/longitude, including locations far from the nearest physical monitor. That's genuinely useful: most people don't live next to a regulatory station, so a raw "nearest monitor" reading can be many miles and several neighborhoods away from where they actually are.
The tradeoff is that a modeled value is an estimate, not a direct measurement. Its accuracy depends on how good the underlying model is for your specific location and conditions, and it can smooth over genuine hyperlocal spikes (a nearby highway, a specific industrial source) that the model wasn't tuned to capture.
What AirNow does
AirNow reports the actual reading from the nearest EPA-certified regulatory monitor, Federal Reference or Equivalent Method instruments, sited and calibrated under strict federal rules. It doesn't estimate or interpolate for locations without a nearby station; it simply reports what the nearest real instrument measured. That's the ground truth the EPA itself uses to enforce air-quality standards.
Why they disagree
- Estimate vs measurement. BreezoMeter interpolates for your exact point; AirNow reports the nearest real monitor, which could be several miles away in a different microclimate.
- Resolution vs accuracy tradeoff. Hyperlocal modeling trades some accuracy for coverage everywhere; regulatory monitoring trades coverage for a directly-measured, legally-defensible number where it exists.
- Update sources. BreezoMeter blends inputs (traffic, weather, satellite) that can shift its estimate between refreshes in ways a single fixed monitor reading won't.
